There is a garage in downtown New York City on the ground floor of an eight-story building, with a winding ramp, that serves as a cache for stolen automobiles. The second floor is the repair shop, with the third, fourth and fifth as storage rooms and the sixth is the paint shop, where the hot cars are quickly changed via new paint, fenders and windshields and license plates. The seventh has a speakeasy, and the eighth is the penthouse where the supposed-gang leader,Jenkins, resides in comfort, while the real head of the gang rambles about posing as a deaf-mute known as The Dummy. All of this goes undetected by NYCs Finest, and might have continued to do so if the ground-floor-garage manager and front-man, Beef Evans , hadnt been sent on a one-way ride down the ramp, and his widow, Nancy, asked her brother, Gabby Denton, to investigate. Or, if Jenkins sweetie, Silver, hadnt gotten the sweets for Gabby.

Mary Stevens (Kay Francis) and her old friend Don Andrews (Lyle Talbot) graduate from medical school at the same time and decide to set up their respective medical offices in the same building. Mary builds her reputation despite many patients refusing to be treated by a woman. Don, however, starts dating Lois Cavanaugh (Thelma Todd), whose family is rich and influential, and neglects his practice for the privileges of a social life. Despite Marys love for Don, he marries Lois and sets up a new office with a high-class clientele. He also gives Mary a new office right next to his; while she ends up making a name for herself in the medical community, Don begins to pilfer funds from his practice. Jealousy and mistrust drive Mary and Don apart, seemingly for good. Two years later, Mary, now a famous doctor, takes a much-needed vacation and runs into Don, who is on the lam from the authorities. Mary and Don have an affair and Don tries to get a divorce. Lois is willing but her father doesnt want the Cavanaugh name mixed up in any scandal. He clears Dons name and gets all charges against him dropped--on the condition that Don will not divorce Lois for at least six months. When Mary finds herself pregnant by Don and hes unable to marry her, she must decide whether to tell him or raise the child on her own; he cant divorce Lois and their baby dies while on the ship. Very harsh. Mary is caught in the act of suicide and saves a child in the final scene. Mary gains her confidence back and all is good.

Four Picture Brides, from New Orleans, arrive in the Brazilian jungle on a riverboat, brought there to marry workers at Lottagrasso, a remote mining site of the Standard Diamond Mines.Also on the boat with the four mail-order brides (Americans Mame Smith, Flo Lane, and Gwen from England and Lena from Europe) is Mary Lee, a frightened and innocent girl, who has come to see the mines brutal supervisor, Von Luden , about a job. Knowing von Ludens inhuman reputation, Mame transfers the photo assigning her to Dave Hart, to Marys Identification card. Castro, the mail-runner, delivers a letter to von Luden informing him that Hart, his partner, is wanted in the United States on an embezzlement charge. Mame, in order to protect Mary, presents herself as a job applicant while Mary is introduced to Dave and his fellow supervisors (Pete, Joe and Bill) as a bride applicant. Dave rescues Mary from a lustful and brutish attack by von Luden. Pretty Mataeo Rogers, half-breed daughter of the camps drunken doctor, is celebrating her 18th birthday and is lured to von Ludens jungle castle. Later, natives find her body in the swamp. Detectives Steve and Al arrive to extradite Dave.
