The Nazi evolution from murderous anti-semitism into organised death camps, as documented in this sober piece of historical excavation from Holocaust specialist James Bulgin, is truly shocking in its specificity. An ad-hoc interpretation of party doctrine became an agreed policy of mass shootings on the Eastern Front, before logistical frustrations and concern for the mental health of the executioners prompted a shift to more efficient methods. Almost as distressing as the barbarism itself was the necessary collaboration and complicity of many thousands of locals across Latvia and Lithuania. Harrowing viewing, but it is surely only in better understanding the detail behind the Nazis mass murders that we can better understand how to ensure it never happens again.

After a traffic accident solely involving a taxi in New York City, the Jane Doe taxi passenger is brought into the hospital, she who is physically all right but who is suffering from retrograde amnesia from the accident. She is assigned under the care of Dr. Michael Lewis, an intern at the hospital, as he is doing research on such amnesia cases. It isnt until a Mr. Goodwin comes to the hospital claiming that she is his daughter Jane that she remembers who she is and the situation: Jane Greystone working for British Intelligence, she who was in the process of being kidnapped by the taxi driver as she has information on the location of British war ships that the Nazis are trying to obtain. She figures the taxi driver and Mr. Goodwin are working for the Nazis. She has to try and convince Mike of who she is and that both their lives are in danger, especially as she requires his help in getting out of this predicament. Mike is torn in believing her and thinking she having an overactive imagination due to the trauma, which is only complicated when Goodwin brings in his own medical specialist, Dr. Ingersoll, who just happens to be Mikes former mentor, but who just happens to be working for the Nazis. Mikes primary concern is Janes well being, especially as he starts to fall for her, as they get into greater danger at the hands of among others Dr. Ingersoll.

In the late 1930s Nella Last, a housewife aged 49, living in Barrow-in-Furness on the North West English coast,agrees to send details of her routine to the Mass observation project, a non-governmental scheme designed to chronicle the lives of ordinary people. When war comes Nella defies her over-protective husband to join the local Womens Voluntary Service. Initially diffident she blossoms thanks to the dominant but kindly Mrs. Waite, and enjoys her independence as a useful war worker. The film also shows her relationship with her two sons as well as the effect of the war on the community and ends by explaining that Nella kept in touch with the Mass Observation project until her death in 1968.
