Grow Up, Tony Phillips

Grow Up, Tony Phillips may take place on Halloween, but it has nothing to do with horror movies and everything to do with that crystalline moment in time everyone has when they realize life marches forward and theyre the youngest theyll ever be. Its a coming-of-age story, but this isnt an indie drama about a boy becoming a man. Its a comedy about Tony Phillips, a guy who doesnt think childhood passions should have an expiration date. This wont be teenage life as viewed from an adults nostalgia-tinted rear view mirror. This is in every sense a teens story told from the perspective of actual teenagers, both behind and in front of the camera. That means no hyper-meta dialogue, no larger-than-life scenarios, and no over-the-top style. This is all straight from Emilys heart.

The Divine Divas are the icons of the first generation of Brazilian transvestite artists in the 1960s. One of the first stages to host men dressed as women was the Rival Theatre, ran by Américo Leal, the directors grandfather. The film shows the intimacy, the talent and the stories of a generation that revolutionized the sexual behavior and defied the moral of a time.

You Got to Move is a documentary by Lucy Massie Phenix (Winter Soldier) and Veronica Selver (Word Is Out) that follows people from communities in the Southern United States in their various processes of becoming involved in social change. The films centerpiece is the Highlander Folk School, a 50-year-old center for education and social action that was somehow involved in each of the lives chronicled. The film shows footage of peaceful, yet somber protests, tells the tales of educators who sought to teach reading and writing skills so that blacks could pass voting requirements in the 1950s and 60s, and reveals the change in lifestyle that Highlander brought to some people who felt that they could contribute nothing to the communities they cared about without a formal education. Each of the individuals in the film was involved in some of the most highly significant movements in American history, from organizing labor rights to the Civil Rights Movement and environmental efforts against the effects of strip mining and toxic waste dumping. You Got to Move features the music of the South and dwells on the courage of those who confront and change reality.
