Junior Walker also known as Autry DeWalt Mixon Jr was a pioneering American saxophonist and vocalist who made significant contributions to the Motown sound Born on June 14 1931 in Blytheville Arkansas Walker grew up in South Bend Indiana He began his musical journey in the church and later formed the band Junior Walker the All Stars in the early 1960s Walkers playing style was characterized by its raw energy and gritty tone which helped propel the group to fame Their breakthrough came in 1965 with the hit song Shotgun establishing Walker as a prominent figure in the Motown roster The band continued to deliver soulful and energetic performances producing charttopping songs like What Does It Take To Win Your Love and How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You Junior Walker was known for his dynamic live performances showcasing his raspy saxophone skills and charismatic stage presence Despite lineup changes he remained a driving force behind the All Stars until his passing on November 23 1995 Walkers legacy lives on through his influence on soul and RB music cementing his status as a Motown legend and an icon of the saxophone in popular music
