Wells Fargo stages are being robbed by The Poet and no one can find out who he is. Wylie is a gambler who is found by the sheriff and gives him the option of going back to a questionable trial in Carson City or finding The Poet for the stage line. Wylie decides to look for the outlaw and he rides out in the stage with Ann and Emily to Cheyenne. He soon finds that the Sundance gang is waiting for The Poet so he impersonates him and finds that Ann is the wife of the outlaw. Wylie is concerned about the gang, The Poet and Ann.

Thunder Mountain is the first of Tim Holts 29 postwar westerns spread over the five year period from June, 1947 to June, 1952. While the film has one Zane Grey title, it has more elements in it from Greys To the Last Man than from Greys Thunder Mountain, a not uncommon practice by RKO when dealing with the works of (Zane Grey). This one had Marvin Hayden(Tim Holt) returning to his Arizona ranch and finding it about to be sold for taxes. It has been in charge of his Mexican-Irish friend Chito Rafferty (Richard Martin). Local saloon-keeper Trimble Carson (Harry Woods), his friend Johnny Blue (Tom Keene) and Sheriff Bagley (Harry Harvey) have information that the ranch is to be the site of a dam and plot to obtain it. Plus, neighboring ranchers Ellen Jorth (Martha Hyer) and her brothers, Chick (Steve Brodie) and Lee (Robert Clarke), are antagonistic toward Hayden because of an old family feud between the Jorths and Haydens. Ellen and Hayden meet while looking for boundary markers between their lands and find stakes bearing the name of the water company. They conclude that Carson is trying to revive the old feud in hopes that one of the firey Jorths will kill Hayden. Later, Carson and Blue kill Chick by bashing his head with a rock so that Hayden, who is known not to carry a gun, will be charged with the murder. Hayden is jailed, but learns from family attorney Jim Gardner (Jason Robards Sr.), that there is still money in his ranch account that will pay the taxes, but the crooked sheriff stalls on accepting the payment. Chito and dance-hall girl Ginger Kelly (Virginia Owen) find evidence implicating Carson in the killing of Chick Jorth. Chito rescues Hayden from the jail, and they go after Carson and Blue. The latter are killed in a gun battle, the feud is settled and peace reigns as Hayden pairs off with Ellen, and Chito with Ginger.

An interesting oddity in Republics B-western series but certainly not the first or only time the studio used a movie set as the backdrop of a plot line. Newcomer Monte Hale is tying to just get a job in western films when he meet young Danny McCoy and his sister Gloria. Danny is trying to get his horse, Pardner into films. Monte sings a song and Pardner does some tricks and a casting director notices. Monte gets a singing-cowboy role and the horse gets a bit, but there is an accidental explosion, engineered by western star Rod Mason, who is jealous of Monte, and the horse is badly scared and blows his lines. Monte takes care of Sheridan in some hand-to-hand fisticuffs and Pardner, trouper that he is, recovers and performs as expected. Republic contractees Roy Rogers and Dale Evans drop by and sing a song while Trigger upstages Pardner with some tap-dancing, and Donald Barry and Allan Lane drop by and say hidy.

North of the Border

In Old California, a young Frenchman transporting a chest full of silver travels by stagecoach to San Marino, to complete a complex business deal. The stagecoach is ambushed by a band of men whose leader, a mysterious bandido known as Cisco (Gilbert Roland), claims the silver is money that was extorted over a period of years from the poor people of California. The bandits take the money and escape, but Cisco stays behind with the Frenchman -- who, it turns out, is actually a lovely mademoiselle, Jeanne DuBois (Ramsay Ames). She follows him to the bandits lair, where Cisco tells her he intends to return the stolen money to the poor people. The two rivals are irresistibly drawn to each other, however, and as a token of love Cisco offers to return the money to Jeanne instead. Now she must decide whether to complete her business deal, or to comply with Ciscos wishes and redistribute the wealth.
