Dr. Conway has perfected a machine which he believes will predict earthquakes, and has determined that one will strike California within 24 hours. He and his patron, Dr. Morton, attempt to convince the Governor but he cannot bring himself to declare an emergency when there is no proof the machine works - which, within 24 hours, it is proven to do. More significantly, Conway is getting readings which indicate a series of additional, pending quakes around the world, which also begin to occur; and more still seem to be on the way. With his assistant Hutch, to whose love for him he seems oblivious, Conway takes his equipment to the deepest point of Carlsbad Caverns, in hopes that being closer to the center of the earth will help discern the cause of the earthquake epidemic. It does, when they inadvertently discover a new element which lies dormant in watery pools deep within the earth but, when in contact with air, becomes violently explosive. Forces unknown appear to be pushing this element surface-ward around the globe, and a computer analysis determines that enough will be exposed to explode the entire world within a little more than 28 days...

Through several more encounters, Kelly develops a friendship with him, partly because of the physical attraction and partly because he is genuinely interested in her. Kelly seems to be opening up, enjoying her time with Sean and pursuing part-time work at a local childrens center. Its not all vacation, though. Part of Kellys recovery process includes regular sessions with DR. HALSEY, a psychiatrist who believes that Kellys new friend is merely a physical manifestation of her own defenses ... an attempt to transform a scary world into a safe, welcoming place. When asked about Sean, Laura Lee must admit that shes never actually seen the boy. Worried about Kellys sanity, Halsey recommends that Kelly end the friendship. No question theyve got a ghost on their hands, so Laura Lee turns to another expert for help. In his first moments at the house, he meets SUZANNE, another ghost. Even though the others cant see her, Franklin knows shes real. Moreover, he believes that she and Sean are not connected to the house, theyre connected to Kelly herself. He begins implementing his own plan to put the spectres to rest. Meanwhile, SUZANNE helps Kelly uncover a mystery at the childrens center where shes been working. For some inexplicable reason, shes been fascinated with C.J., a young orphan boy whose mother RENEE died a few months earlier. Unfortunately, the identity of C.J.s father is a secret Renee took with her to the grave. Through diligent research and a little bit of luck, Kelly locates C.J.s father SAM and puts him on a path to be united with the son he never knew. Kelly feels good about her accomplishment but learns that the real journey has just begun when WILLIAM, another ghost at the house, forces her to come face to face to face with the most startling ghost of all ... and some spirits dont go easily. With the help of her mom, Dr. Halsey and Franklin, Kelly must solve the mystery surrounding these spirits connection to her and try to understand what it is they want. Theres a disturbing revelation lying in wait, however, just around one of the houses dark corners, and its a revelation that will end Kellys life as she knows it.
