They arrange for Carol to be hired as a secretary for rich bachelor racetrack enthusiast and coffee magnate , Fuller Partridge. Fuller soon falls for Carol but doesnt let her know. Aunt Jane and Waldo try to set up a romantic interlude for the two at a resort. They insist Carol join them at the resort to recuperate from her near breakdown at work. Fuller, a workaholic refuses to go - Carol goes up alone. Waldo phones Fuller that Carol is delirious and is calling out for him. Fuller rushes up to the resort. Meanwhile, Waldo and Aunt Jane hire a hypnotist to hypnotize Carol to become delirious. By mistake, Aunt Jane is hypnotized instead and is calling out for Fuller. Waldo hides Aunt Jane in Carols bed and fools Fuller into believing shes Carol. Fuller uncovers Waldos scheme and accuses Carol of entrapping him into marriage and leaves. Now Waldo must convince Fuller that Carol is innocent....

Its Homecoming weekend at Midwestern University, the weekend which will culminate with the big game between Midwestern and Michigan. Homecoming marks the return for the first time in six years of alumnus All-American Joe Ferguson, whose world is all about football and especially his place in it. Mild-mannered English Professor Tommy Turner is able to handle the thought of Joes return to campus as the ex-boyfriend of Tommys wife of six years, Ellen Turner née Stanley, who is temperamentally more like Joe than him. Tommy knows that Ellen loves him, the reason he doesnt mind the thought of Joe. The weekend starts off well enough for Tommy in that he believes he is being promoted from associate to full professor, which if be the case would be much earlier than he or Ellen had expected. However, it comes to his attention that Michael Barnes, an idealistic student of his who is also the editor of the campus literary magazine, has written an editorial for the upcoming edition of the magazine denouncing what he considers the fascist policies of the Ed Keller led Board of Trustees, who have gone on a Communist witch hunt among the faculty, and praising who he considers principled Tommy, as Tommy is planning on reading to his English Composition class a letter written by anarchist Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Tommy admits the fact that Michael has written is true, he regularly reading what he considers documents of good writing by non-professional writers, regardless of content or the author, as he is also planning to read to his class a document written by Abraham Lincoln. Frederick Damon, the Dean of the English Department, wants to stay out of the fray and what he knows will be the wrath of the powerful Keller about the editorial and Tommys intended actions. Tommy has to decide what to do, he reading the letter which would jeopardize his life at Midwestern. Through the weekend, he also sees what he thinks is more clearly Ellens kinship to both him and Joe, she who would be better off with his competitor than him. What Tommy decides to do may not only affect his position and his marriage, but also the life of Ellens younger sister Patricia Stanley as two men vie for her affections: Michael and the teams star fullback, the dimwitted Wally Myers.

Lowell Blackford (Kay Kyser) is blessed with a gift of music,but also cursed with a hereditary evil eye which hypnotizes people,and he is virtually a recluse. He goes in search of a Broadway publisher for a symphonietta he has written, and ends up crashing an audition at the Swing Publishing Company, where he meets torch singer Ginger Gray (Marilyn Maxwell) and her fiance and promoter, Waltzy Malone (William Gargan). Ginger accidently walks off with his music and he follows her to a gym where Waltzys fighter, Killer Kennedy (Nat Pendleton), has just been kayoed by his sparring partner. Waltzy learns of Lowells hypnotic power and believes that Kennedy can win the championship if Lowell uses his power against the champ. He arranges for Lowell to lead the band at the club where Ginger sings. The latter objects to the role she is to play in getting Lowell to use his evil eye but Waltzy persuades her to go along by telling Lowell that Kennedy is her brother and it means everything to her if he wins the fight. Lowell, after having Ginger turn down his marriage proposal, joins the Tank Corps. Waltzy is frantic and he has a phoney doctor tell Lowell he needs rest followed by attending a prize fight, and also tells him Ginger has accepted his proposal.

For those, if any, who have wondered why so many Paramount contractees appeared in United Artists films during the war years, this is another one of the Paramount productions that was sold to United Artists in the early-40s when U.A. was having trouble meeting their exhibitor contracts because of lack of product, mainly due to their loss of production in England. A group of starving, but young and willing, actors band together to share finances and an apartment. Norman Reese (William Holden) orders no love nonsense between the boys and girls till they are set on Broadway, but Marge Benson (Barbara Britton) and Tony Dennison (James Brown) are already secretly married. A friend drops in to see Dottie Coburn (Martha ODriscoll) and is shocked to find the boys and girls sharing the same apartment and insists it is her duty to inform Dotties father (Jay Fassett.) Since Dottie is the only one with any money, the boys hurriedly pack their belongings and leave until after Mr. Coburns visit. Seeing nothing but girls, Dad is pacified until one of the boys, George Bodell (Eddie Bracken) not in on and unaware of the move, comes home to take a bath, and the girls, to keep Coburn in the dark, accuse him of bring a mad housebreaker. The downstairs tenant, producer Arthur Kenny (Robert Benchley), also gets involved.

The girls go to see their fathers boss, Robert Nelson, to locate their father and bring him home. Meanwhile, on Louises Cuban cruise, she meets famed pianist and conductor, Jose Iturbi. Jose is immediately taken by Louise, but she plays hard-to-get, but has the time of her life. When Louise finally returns home, she has a secret to tell the girls, but, the girls have a secret too..
