In 1860, as the American Experiment threatened to explode into a bloody civil war, there were as many as four hundred thousand slave-owners in the United States, and almost four million slaves. The nation was founded upon the idea that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The nation would pay a bloody cost for denying that right to more than twelve percent of its population. But when slavery was first brought to Americas shores, this war, and even the nation it tore apart, was centuries in the future. With incredibly detailed historical reenactments, expert commentary and the stories of slavery told through first-hand accounts, this is an epic struggle 400 years in the making. A journey into the past like none other. This is the story of these men and women who by their hands laid the foundation of what would become the most powerful nation on Earth. An innovative magic realist documentary set in Iraq. Filmmaker Mark Cousins, who was brought up in a Northern Irish war zone, travels to Goptapa, a Kurdish-Iraqi village of just 700 people on a tributary of the Tigris river, and tries to make a dream film about a place that is normally only portrayed in current affairs programmes. He gives the kids cameras. They make little movies about war, love, a fish that goes to a magical place, and a chicken who debates justice. Despite the production being stopped twice by the Iraqi secret police, The First Movie is about wonder and the power of the imagination.

Despite being one of Stanley Kubricks greatests films and therefore a cinema masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange was banned by Spains Franco government, a fascist dictatorship that had ruled the country for over 35 years after a cruel civil war. The films visuals clashed head-on with the regimes strict moral codes and censors who wished to clamp down on any subversive ideas entering Spain. Surprisingly, however, the film premiered uncensored at a long-running religious film festival, the Seminci in Valladolid, located in one of Spains most conservative cities. How could something like this even occur? This documentary, in which Malcolm McDowell (main character in A Clockwork Orange) collaborates, aims to take the audience on an adventure that answers that very question, but also poses an even greater one: can a movie change the world?

School Town King opens with a boy rapping. The 18-year-old Book and 13-year-old Non, living in the slums of Thailand, already know a life that started from zero. These slum kids rappers, who dream of becoming the best rappers in Thailand and buying a house for their mother, are struggling to find a way to quit school. They hate studying but what they hate the most is to recite the 12 commandments to be good children written by the military. Sometimes in quick and sensuous editing, or with a long tracking shot, Dir. Laisuwanchai builds the rhythm of the film, as the boys rap against poverty, inequality, and repressive educational systems. It is a cheerful and harmonious ensemble of kids rappers and a young director.

Flood in the Desert tells the dramatic story of the March 1928 collapse of the St. Francis Dam and its aftermath, which was the second deadliest disaster in California history. The resulting flood killed over 400 people, destroyed millions of dollars of property, and washed away the reputation of one of the most celebrated men in Southern California, William Mulholland. A self-taught engineer, Mulholland had ensured Los Angeles remarkable growth by building a cement aqueduct that piped water from the Owens Valley across the Mojave Desert and into the arid city, 233 miles away. He had good intentions, but the bursting of his St. Francis Dam, the citys largest single reservoir, was a colossal engineering and human failure.
