Zapped! was made in 1981 by Embassy Pictures for $2 million and was released the following year, making less than $17 million in its initial release. Critics generally panned Zapped! for a weak story line and for relying on gratuitous nudity. However, over the years it sold heavily in videos and spawned a 1990 direct-to-video sequel, Zapped Again! (with only Sue Ane Langdon returning from the original cast).

The Visitors (Les Visiteurs) is a French fantasy comedy film directed by Jean-Marie Poiré and released in 1993. In this comedy, a 12th-century knight and his servant travel in time to the end of the 20th century and find themselves adrift in modern society. A sequel, The Visitors II: The Corridors of Time followed in 1998, and an American remake, Just Visiting, made with the same stars, was released in 2001. The Visitors: Bastille Day has been announced with the original cast, for a 2016 release.

This was followed in 2019 by a sequel entitled Journey to China: The Mystery of Iron Mask. Both films star Jason Flemyng and Charles Dance. The sequel also features Rutger Hauer (in one of his final films before his death), Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Helen Yao. The film series is loosely based on the Nikolai Gogol story of the same name, which tells of the exploits of Cartographer Jonathan Green.

The film was financially successful, grossing $4 million in its opening weekend and totaling $27.8 million in its run against an estimated $3 million budget. The film was followed by one theatrical sequel, three direct-to-video sequels, and a spin-off film series. In each film, Buddy learns to play a different sport while the spin offs focus on Buddy's children, the Buddies.
