Meeting up with pal Gabe and his new French bride, the boys are tormented by mad scientists who try to convince them the place is haunted and then kidnap Sach in order to place his brain inside a gorilla.

Slip (Leo Gorcey) and Sach (Huntz Hall) lose their jobs with a laundry company after they wreck the delivery truck. They talk Louie (Bernard Gorcey) into using the back room of his Malt Shop for a laundromat. Laura Andrews (Anabel Shaw) leaves her baby wrapped in a bundle at the launderette to hide him from her neurotic aunts, Hope (Ida Moore)and Faith Andrews (Florence Auer), who have Laura committed to a sanitarium in a plot to gain the rich estate left by their brother to his grandson, Lauras baby. Sach finds the baby and the Bowery Boys hold onto him because of Lauras note that she will return. Meanwhile, mobster Bananas Stewart (Gabriel Dell sees the baby and he and Cherry Nose inform the aunts that they will return him for the offered $25,000 reward. The aunts offer them an additional $25,000 if they will keep him hidden until after the will is read. Slip does not see this as a good plan, and investigates the matter further.

Chuck, a reporter for The Blade newspaper, gets beaten up while trying to get a story on prison corruption, and the rest of the Bowery Boys, Slip, Sach, and Butch, get themselves arrested so that they can complete the expose from inside the prison, while serving a short---they think---six month sentence. Inside the Big House, they learn that ex-gangsters Ed Lannigan, Tom Tomcyk, and Big Greenie, are living in the lap of luxury within the prison, by paying off Jenkins, the corrupt Captain of the Guards. And, on the side, the Boys, Sach in particular, slowly send Dr. Fordyce, the prison psychiatrist, off the deep end as they clumsily go about their investigation.

Sach has become a camera fiend so, in the pursuit of some ready cash, Duke takes him and his photographs to the editor of the New York Morning Blade, Mr. Ray Vance. He hires them to get some photos of gangland boss Frankie Arbo but Mr. Arbo does not care to have his picture in the papers and dislikes cameramen for the same reason. Sach and Duke pose as interior decorators in the penthouse of Mae Randall in order to get photos of Arbo. Later, at Arbos night club, the boys learn that the gangster is importing a tough hoodlum from Chicago. Sach and Duke lure the visiting gunman, Handsome Hal Lomax to Mrs. Kellys boardinghouse and trick him into staying there through false police calls. Sach masquerades as Handsome Hal and gets away with it, and he and Duke manage to get into Arbos inner office with the Boss and his henchmen, and the boys are cut into the gangs racket, which is counterfeit money. Then Handsome Hal shows up and things are getting dicey for the boys until Handsome Hals jilted sweetheart, Dolly Tate makes her appearance, and she is so put out with getting jilted by the real Handsome Hal that she identifies Sach as the real Handsome Hal, and fingers Handsome himself as the impostor.. Sach has been taking photos with a miniature camera hidden in his cigarette holder, but accidentally unloads the camera, and the film falls out, exposing the boys and the film.
